چکیده

SN 2002kg is a type IIn supernova, detected in October 2002 in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 2403. We show that the position of SN 2002kg agrees within the errors with the position of the LBV V37. Ground based and HST ACS images however show that V37 is still present after the SN 2002kg event. We compiled a lightcurve of V37 which underlines the variablity of the object, and shows that SN 2002kg was the brightening of V37 and not a supernova. The recent brightening is not a giant eruption, but more likely part of an S Dor phase. V37 shows strong Hα+[N II] emission in recent images and in the SN 2002kg spectrum, which we interprete as the signature of the presence of an LBV nebula. A historic spectrum lacks emission, which may hint that we are witnessing the formation of an LBV nebula.

DISCOVERY OF PRECURSOR LBV OUTBURSTS IN TWO RECENT OPTICAL TRANSIENTS: THE FITFULLY VARIABLE MISSING LINKS UGC 2773-OT AND SN 2009ip

We present progenitor star detections, light curves, and spectra of supernova (SN) 2009ip and the 2009 optical transient in UGC 2773 (U2773-OT), which were not genuine supernovae. In particular, precursor variability in the decade before outburst indicates that both of these progenitor stars were luminous blue variables (LBVs). Their pre-outburst light curves resemble the S Doradus phases that ...

The Progenitor of Supernova 2004dj in a Star Cluster

The progenitor of type II-plateau supernova (SN) 2004dj is identified with a supergiant in a compact star cluster known as ”Sandage Star 96” (S96) in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 2403, which was fortuitously imaged as part of the Beijing-Arizona-Taiwan-Connecticut (BATC) Multicolor Sky Survey from Feb 1995 to Dec 2003 prior to SN 2004dj. The superior photometry of BATC images for S96, taken wit...

THE YOUNG , MASSIVE , STAR CLUSTER SANDAGE - 96 AFTER THE EXPLOSION OF SN 2004 dj IN NGC 2403

The bright Type II-plateau supernova (SN) 2004dj occurred within the young, massive stellar cluster Sandage-96 in a spiral arm of NGC 2403. New multi-wavelength observations obtained with several ground-based and space-based telescopes are combined to study the radiation from Sandage-96 after SN 2004dj faded away. Sandage-96 started to dominate the flux in the optical bands starting September 2...

On the progenitor of SN 2005gl and the nature of Type IIn supernovae

We present a study of the type IIn supernova (SN) 2005gl, in the relatively nearby (d ≈ 66 Mpc) galaxy NGC 266. Photometry and spectroscopy of the SN indicate it is a typical member of its class. Pre-explosion Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging of the location of the SN, along with a precise localization of this event using the Laser-Guide-Star assisted Adaptive Optics (LGS-AO) system at Keck...

The Rise of the Remarkable Type IIn Supernova SN 2009ip

Recent observations by Mauerhan et al. have shown the unprecedented transition of the previously identified luminous blue variable (LBV) and supernova impostor SN 2009ip to a real Type IIn supernova (SN) explosion. We present high-cadence optical imaging of SN 2009ip obtained between 2012 UT Sep. 23.6 and Oct. 9.6, using 0.3 − 0.4 meter aperture telescopes from the Coral Towers Observatory in C...
